Drummers are as fit as footballers
A study by Gloucester University and the University of Chichester compared the fitness levels of 'Blondie' drummer Clem Burke to the fitness levels of Premier League football players with surprising results. It was found that while playing Clem Burkes heart rate was raised to a similar level of a top footballer who is running. But whilea top footballer is expected to play one or two 90 minute football matches a week a drummer on tour would play a 90 minute set every night.

Drumming can help brain development
Playing the drums can help to improve communication between the left and right sides of the brain, which both control different functions that we make use of in everyday life.
Esther Andrews writes that "Research has shown that it is very important to increase the communication, or the connection between the 2 hemispheres of the brain. If we do that, we increase the functionality of the brain. This can be done in all ages, and has proven to be beneficial. Improved balance between the two hemispheres, improves peace of mind, harmony, reading and comprehension, and develops better concentration and focus."
Activities that involve using both sides of the brain working together, e.g. walking or swimming, have been shown to develop brain communiation, and playing the drums is an excellent activity for devloping the brain as it involves using the right and left arms and legs independently of each other at the same time, a skill which can be dificult to master but becomes easier with practice.
